The Oak from Borzesti Church

judetul Bacau, Moldova

AddressSat Borzesti,

The Oak from Borzesti Church - was built by Stefan cel Mare on the place where his friend was killed by the Tartars. This event has been preserved in the legends of this area, which say that Gheorghita died in this place killed by the Turks' arrows.

Church of Borzesti is famous for the legend that revolves around her. The interior of the church was painted until July 2004 when people commemorated the 500 years since the passage in nothingness of Prince Stefan cel Mare.

Borzesti is a village in Bacau County, where was born and raised Stefan cel Mare. Currently, the village has become one of Onesti city neighborhoods. Stefan inherited the estate of Borzesti from his ancestors. The Church from Borzesti is dedicated to the Assumption and was built at the initiative of Stefan cel Mare, between July 1493 and October 1494.

As indicated in the inscription written in Slavonic, the Church from Borzesti was built by Prince Stefan along with his son, Alexandru, in a year, three months and three days. The construction was made in the Moldavian style, being highlighted the plastic decoration of the facade.

The halidom is large and have its facades decorated with enameled ceramic and brick with stone. Three green belts of enameled brick surround the building, starting below the windows. The church is built of river stone and looks like other Moldovan churches from the time of Prince Stefan. For binder is possible to have been used either eggs or animal blood.

Currently the interior of the church is painted entirely by Master Grigore Popescu, to give vitality and vivacity to the church. On the inside of the windows are depicted scenes from well-known legend - the hanging of Gheorghita, in the oak, as a sign of defeat of the troup he led and his killing by the Tartars.
