The Roman Camp

Drobeta Turnu Severin, judetul Mehedinti

AddressIndependentei, 2

Drobeta Turnu Severin was the first stone castle built in Dacia (103-105), and dates from II-V centuries. Roman camp ruins in Drobeta are situated near Traian's bridge. The camp has been built during the Roman emperor Traian's reign and was one of the largest in Dacia, guarded by walls of 1.5 m thickness, a height of 3 m and 4 defense towers. Inside the camp were residential rooms for officers detached here, an altar, deposits of food and mmunition, a Praetorium (captain seat).

The defense Roman camp
was originally built to shelter the 500 soldiers who provided security for the bridge. Even today the foundations can be seen (restored by Constantine the Great) on an area of 2 hectares, with four side gates, housing, barracks, depots of arms, streets and in the center of the camp the building of the Pretoria (captain), where stopped the emperor Traian himself in the winter of 105.

At west of the camp, on the shore of Danube, the ruins of the Roman baths can be seen; there were found bricks stamped with the legion V Macedonica, in the walls, sign of dating the construction of the baths in the same time with the construction of the bridge and the camp.
