Description

The Roman Catholic Church is a monument built in 1844 and expanded in 1873. Among the artistic objects, we can find: the painting "St. John the Baptist preaching", Pieta and Saint Francis of Assisi statues, The Great Sanctuary made out of colored marbles, "The Sacred Heart of Lord Jesus Christ" statue.

Francis Pastiss de Candia, Franciscan missionary (1622) is the one that gives us the first data about the Roman Catholic Church in Galati. The Bishop Marcu Bandini reminds the same church in the "Bandinus Codex", printed by the Romanian Academy: "There is a Catholic church in Galati made out of unburnt bricks, build after a rudimentary plan, covered by reeds, no bell ... " (November 11, 1646).

Because of the fire from 1660, the church is destroyed, and instead they will build another church, which was confirmed by the testimony of Bishop Vito Piluzzi who visited the church in 1682. In 1806, both the church and the parish house were burned by the Turks.

Stephen Ross, the Franciscan Father, on the 21 of August 1838, was appointed as the first vicar of Galati. This structure was build with the money input of Ardolini Bishop, Mihai Sturza prince and the Orthodox brothers, among the benefactors were the magistrate Alecsandri from Iasi, which donated the organ. The church is finished in 1844. Dedicated to St. John the Baptist, the church was consecrated on the 5 of November 1844.

The inside of the church was renovated several times. The last renovation was done in 2003 under the administration of father parish Eusebiu Pista.
