The Ruins of Adrian Fortress

judetul Bihor, Crisana

AddressSat Salard,

Ruins of a dungeon, the last architectural traces of a medieval royal castle, are placed in Barcaului dams in the eastern border of the village Salard. The ruins come from two walls of a tower with a square plan, divided (initially) on the vertical plane in three or four levels, with walls having a thickness of about 4 meters.

Arad Fortress was probably built by the royal judge Paul of Geregye. In 1277 it was besieged by King Ladislau IV Cumanul and later donated to Toma from Borsa family. In 1294 it was unsuccessfully besieged by King Andrew II. At the beginning of the XIVth century, the castle functioned as the headquarters of Borsa Kopasz palatinate. Later it was returned to the royalty and since 1349 it was transferred in possession of the Queen. In 1395, Queen Mary donated Adrian Fortress to the Csaky family.

In the last decades of the nineteenth century there were other ruins from another corner of the fortress, located a few tens of meters from the dungeon trails. The rest of the traces are all covered by ground and are located in the flooded area of Barcau, regulated at the end-nineteenth century.
