The Stairs Tower

Sibiu, judetul Sibiu

AddressPiata Huet, 3

The city and its surroundings have been inhabited since the Neolithic. In the Roman period in this area was Cedonia village destroyed because many waves of migratory people have crossed this region. The Szeklers settled here at the end of the first millennium and were relocated during the reign of King Geza II, who brought the Germans in their place, with the mission to defend Oituz defile. In the documents of the XIIth century the town was listed as Cibin, but the Saxons (Germans) called it Hermannsdorf after one of their leaders.

Soon it becamed the religious center of the Saxons. In 1241 the town was destroyed by the Tartars, who came through Oituz. Following the rapid reconstruction and privileges granted in the XIIIth century the town becomes Hermannstadt city. Then they built the fortified church with towers and walls and then it was formed a line of defense consisting of natural lakes.

The defensive power of the 19 guilds was proven by the three failed besieged of the Turks in the XVth century. Although during the two large fires in the XVIth century several towers which deposited gunpowder have exploded, they were always rebuilt and repaired.
Thus, at the end of the XVIth century the walls were guarded by 39 towers and 4 gate-towers. The real danger to the city was the wave of constructions thet began in the XVII-XVIII centuries, which led to the demolition of older houses and gates in the nineteenth century. Fortunately the medieval atmosphere of the town is preserved nowadays due to the towers walls and bastions.

The current elevation is totally changed by the renovations from the years 1542 and 1862 - 1863; it is presented as a massive brick building, with one floor, having a vaulted passage at the first level. At the first floor was arranged a house in the year 1897.
Under the tower one can get to the stairs that make the connection between the "upper town" and the "lower town".
Until the last century the access was made through a road that was arranged parallel to the walls of the first precincts of the fortification from the direction "Stairs Passage", which continued through a gangway of the no.4 house on Tower street. In this way, the former basement of the house from Huet Square no. 3, the wine cellar "The golden barrel" ("Butoiul de aur"), has become ground floor to the mentioned passage.
