Description

Alba Iulia National Museum of Union, as it has been named since 1992, was set up in 1888, following an initiative of the History, Archeology and Natural Sciences Society of Alba County. The name "History Museum" was given in 1929, when the well-known credentials of the delegates at the Great National Gathering from the 1st of December 1918 were obtained. Since 1957, the museum has been administering the former Army House, where the Union Hall is located, and its present day headquarter, the "Babylon Palace," was obtained in 1967.

Presently, the Museum of the National Union is hosting almost 200,000 patrimonial objects, of which the rood screen from the Blaj-Tiur church, numerous antique and medieval monetary treasures, the Dacian silver treasure discovered at Lupu and the old Romanian books are of special value. The museum's library, with around 70,000 tomes, is one of the most valuable documentary libraries in Romania. Several magazines published abroad are exclusively accessible here to the Romanian researchers. The Museum Yearbook, Apulum Acta Apulensis, reached no. 44, and since 1994 a series of specialized publications called "Bibliotecha Musei Apulensis" were edited, now at no. XX.

The National Union Museum's activity takes place in the Archeology/Research, History/Museography and Patrimony Evidence sections, with the addition of the Ceramic, Textile and Metal Restoration laboratory and the Old Book Restoration and Conservation Center. With its specialists (prestigious names of the Romanian historical science) and through its exhibitions the National Union Museum from Alba Iulia stands as one of the most attractive institutions of its profile in Romania.
