The Wooden Church from Cornesti

judetul Maramures, Maramures

AddressLoc. Calinesti, Sat Cornesti,

One of the oldest churches in Maramures is the Wooden Church from Cornesti. According to specialists in dendrochronology, it was built at the beginning of the eighteenth century. Modifications and repairs were made mainly during the eighteenth century when the walls were painted.

The sign of its ageing are the small size compared with other churches in the area, as is the fact that the pronaos has windows. The building has a roof with double eaves, allowing the nave to have a fairly high arch. The roof of the altar is lower than the general.

The interior walls were painted in 1750 by the Toader Hodor from the Viseul de Mijloc. This is also the one who painted the church of Barsana. The Baroque style was integrated in rural paintings by him in Maramures. The paintings were applied on textile pieces and covered with a layer of lime preparation. The authenticity of the artist's name was originally found on an inscription on the south wall of the nave: "it’s me, the humble painter Toader Hodor from the Viseul de Mijloc, who painted the church for the Lord to remember him".

Many of the old paintings were destroyed and the initial arrangement of the scenes were disturbed again by the repainting of the walls in the first half of the nineteenth century. Originally reserved for the theme of judgment, the space hosts gospel scenes near the presence of the holy ones.

In terms of painting, on the southern wall, the first record, there are found fragments of the Great Inquest and on the second register - Escape from Egypt, Jesus and Holy Anointing of the foot of Jesus. The west wing presents the Great Inquest, with the patriarchs Abraham, Isaac and Jacob above the entrance door.
