The Wooden Church from Poienile Izei

judetul Maramures, Maramures (UNESCO)

AddressLoc. Poienile Izei,

In the area of Poienile Izei can be viewed many of the most beautiful and important wooden churches in the world. One of these is the Wooden Church which is dedicated to Saint Parascheva. About this monastery edifice it is said that the "wood foundation" was made in the fourteenth century. The church was been then rebuilt in the early sixteenth century.

For the building of the church it was used the fir. The church's structure is the following: the main body is rectangular, has two rows of roof eaves; the portal has protruding roof, the nave is very high and the dome was narrowed by using beams on each side; the church tower with a conical roof gives the edifice a royal air. The beautifully painted double doors (the upper part shows the figures of Saints Peter and Paul, and lower part the climbing beef-vine) realize the church's entry.

The paintings in Byzantine style impress in the entry into the church. These are true works of art in which color plays an important role, the one that gives unity to the scenes by the painter George from Dragomiresti in the late eighteenth century. There are revealed scenes from the New Testament (and Old Testament) which illustrate the life and the sufferings of Jesus.

One of the most important religious works in Maramures and the main theme of the narthex is the Doomsday. This theme suggests to the viewer that the immorality, the lie, the envy and the evil are unworthy characteristics of a good Christian.

The Wooden Church from Poienile Izei is part of the eight churches included in the inheritance list of UNESCO.
