The ruins of the medieval fortification from Turda-Veche

Turda, judetul Cluj

Churches from Turda created their fortifications all around, after the invasion of the Tartars (Mongols) in 1241.

The most important fortification was built around the current Calvin Reformed Churches from Turda-Veche.
In XV-XVI centuries, the current Calvin Reformed Church was surrounded by a thick wall of defense, with four corner bastions. During the rule of Prince Sigismund Bathory (1581-1597 and 1599-1602), the bastion of the northwestern side was demolished to allow the reconstruction and expansion of the Princely palace near the Church (now the Museum of History).

Church, enclosing wall and bastions have suffered damage during the fightings of Giorgio Basta (1600-1601) and after the armed conflicts between Curuts and Lobonts in the years that followed.

The wall and the bastions were gradually restored by the principles Gabriel Bathory (1608-1613), Gabriel Bethlen (1613-1630) and George Rakoczi I (1630-1648). Later, the walls and the bastions have lost their military utility.

Currently it is still kept a fragment of the wall parallel with "Mircea cel Batran" Street, between the Church and the courtyards of the neighbouring houses, having a trapezoidal bastion on the corner. On the external side of the wall is still preserved the inscription "1608", the year of the restoration of this portions of wall (since Prince Gabriel Bathory, 1608-1613).

There are also remains of the wall in the courtyards of some houses in the Republic Square (Piata Republicii) .
