Tinovul Mare Reserve

Vatra Dornei, judetul Suceava

AddressCom. Poiana Stampei,

Situated within the village Poiana Stampei, Tinovul Mare Reservation has an area of 675 ha. This presents a great scientific interest because there have been preserved relics from different climatal eras, with an age of tens of thousands of years and is also the largest reserve of peat in Romania.

In the village Poiana Stampei, surrounded by hills Smida, Casoi, Ciungii Chiperenilor, on the left of the national road Vatra Dornei - Bistrita, it is the Reservation Tinovul Mare. By crossing a wooden bridge over the Casoi streamlet, you may enter into Tinov.
Situated at an altitude of 880 m, this swamp, declared natural monument in 1955, is crossed by a 900m long wooden bridge that allows visiting the reserve. The acidity of muscle layers that allowed the undebased preservation of pollen deposited in layers of peat over thousands of years, represents the scientific importance of the reserve. The analysis can determine time evolution of peat formation thousands of years ago.

Soil and water are highly acidic, colored with graduated shades of brown, predominantly humic acids. In this respect, bacterial flora totally missing due to acidity and lack of oxygen. The tests and trials conducted by Emil Pop, concluded the existence of the following sequence of vegetation:
  • Phase spruce-beech-fir, the most recent is the beech phase;
  • Phase of spruce-pine, with traces of peanuts and mixed Stejaris (with elm and linden), least represented as crossing the early boreal stage;
  • Phase spruce-hornbeam;
  • Phase pine-hazel-mixed Stejaris, mainly spruce, including the postglacial warm weather and up to southern boreal;
  • Phase of pine mixed with spruce, willow and birch partially.
The fauna, besides representatives of the mountain region, features some relicts of very far areas: Greenland, Scotland, Far East, such as Macrobiatus dubrus - unknown in Central and Southern Europe, an ant (Forni fusca Picea) and spiders Tetragantha Pinicola, Therium undulatum and Drasodes margaritella.

The herbaceous flora is composed of species as: fern (Dryopteris cristata), "merisor" (Vaccinium vitis-idea), blueberries (Vaccinium myrtilus), "rachiteaua" (Vaccinium oxicocos), "ruginarea" (Andromeda polyfolia), "vuietoarea" (Empetrum nigrum), sedge (Carex pauciflora ), and the muscles - Saphagnum wulfianum - arctic and subarctic relict characteristic of peripheral regions.

Currently the dominant wood species in the swamp Poaina Stampei is the pine (Pinus silvestris turfosa form) which grows hard, reaching diameters between 10-22 cm at the age of about 100 years, downy birch (Betula pubescens) and some hybrids (Betula hybrida, Betula warnstorffii), and species like mountain ash, aspen and spruce (which form the protection zone).

So, this reserve preserves both relict species and the current species, emphasizing the evolutionary process of species over the years. They are a testament to the passage of time, their existence being extremely valuable for the study of species succession and rational exploitation of peat for its outstanding qualities (clean, isolated, medicinal peat, fertilizer for flowers etc.).
