Traian Demetrescu Memorial House (1866-1896) was nationalized in 1950 and in 1966 at the celebration of the poet, it became a memorial museum, equipped with items belonging to the poet, kept with devotion by his sister Victoria Popescu (born Demetrescu) who became curator of the Memorial House.

The earthquake from 1977 caused some damages, requiring the moving of the collection for making repairs. After the repairs in 1978, the objects were restored in the museum, some of them being lost and the visitation program was not a regular one. Since 1980, the floor of the building was the headquarters company of amateur painters "Constantin Brancusi". After 1990 the building received minor repairs, the floor being rented to a publishing houses and in the ground floor and basement have worked a period galleries "Vollard". In 1995 all the museum objects were moved to the Museum of Oltenia.

Mrs. Elena Popescu, grand-daughter of sister, sold to Craiova City Hall the building with the purpose of providing rehabilitation and rearranging as Memorial House and headquarters for the House of Culture Traian Demetrescu.

Traian Demetrescu House of Culture
has mainly the following objectives:
  • Organization of activities of cultural and artistic permanent education;
  • Preservation and transmission of moral artistic and technical values of the local community of the national and universal heritage;
  • Organizing or supporting amateur artistic bands in competitions and festivals;
  • Organizing or supporting activities of documentation of temporary exhibitions, preparation of monographs, civic education and public information papers.
