Turris Stronghold ruins

Turnu Magurele, judetul Teleorman

Description

Near Turnu Magurele, on the left bank of the Danube, in the II AD century there was a strong fortification. On it’s ruins was built Constantine’s The Great Stronghold, in the IV century AD. Turnu medieval fortress, built over the Roman one, was built by Mircea the Old (1386-1393).

Regarding the construction phases, they may not be fully distinguished, nor can certainly be dated. In the first phase it is supposed that the “dungeon was built, with a diameter of 17.40 m, where there were reused Roman elements and wooden beams fro strengthening. Because groundwater was very high, the excavations could not reach the foundation, however, through deep surveys, it was agreed that it is likely that this round tower to rest on a wood drivers reinforced ground, then on a cement layer.

Repairs have occurred after the battles from the end of the fourteenth century, in 1420 when Muhammad conquered the city and those from the sixteenth century (1522 and 1594). In terms of analogies that can be made, they are related to the central circular tower, because the city plan closely follows the structure of fortification said to be Roman. It would find the closest similarity with the tower from Gradiste near Sekunic and the one from Petric.
