Ullmann Palace

Oradea, judetul Bihor

AddressMihai Viteazu, 2

Ullman Palace, historical monument built in 1913, is representative for the Jewish community of Oradea. Ullmann Izidor is one of the Jews settled in the town on the shore of Crisul Repede, in 1868. Entrepreneurial spirit as his father, Sandor built Ullmann Palace after  the architect Lobll Ferenc's plans.

The building, in Viennese Secession style, has three floors built on a high floor and a penthouse. The floor is fully built, but the floors are developing around an interior courtyard. The facade is symmetrical and well proportioned, penultimate bays are slightly curved forming bow-windows at one and two floors, with balconies with semicircular doors-windows, the facade ending in a trapezoidal attic.
In the exterior decoration of the facade we can see elements characteristic to Jewish sacred art: menor (candelabrum with seven arms) guarded by two lions and numerous floral and geometric motifs. The floor was plated with green-blue faience plates.

The building with a courtyard was designed to be block of flats for generous families. The apartments towards the street were richly designed, while towards the yard the servants' homes were located. Initially, in the building there was an old Hebrew rite chapel.

During the Second World War, Ullmann Palace was part of the perimeter of the ghetto, here and in the surrounding area being massed the Jews which were deported to extermination camps. After the war, Ullmann Palace returned to what had been before, a block of flats, and in the attic there were arranged workshops for professional sculptor artists.
