Unitarian Church from Turda

Turda, judetul Cluj

AddressDacia, 3

The Unitarian Church from Turda was built between 1791-1792 by the mason master Janos Sandor from Moldovanesti. The interior of the church was finished in 1797.

The church was built on a land that belonged to an old unitarian school, located near the unitarian gymnasium. Near  the new church existed until the early nineteenth century, an unitarian confessional school (the school building was demolished in 1801 to make some room for the church tower, built between 1801-1809). On the entrance wall of the church's annex building (where in the past served the Unitarian Gymnasium) is a square plate with the Latin inscription: MUSISET VIRTUTI BUS SACRUM. MDCCCLXV (1865).

The church was renovated in the years 1828, 1890, 1903 and 1946. In a larger proportion was renovated in 1903, according to the plan of architect Lajos Pakei. The local counsellor Iosif Pataki succeeded in the 80-90's to impress the citizens of Turda through his wooden sculptures. The most important achievement was the interior decoration of the  unitarian church with wooden objects.

Since 1984, when began the church decoration, Iosif Pataki has created over 60 works in wood, from chandeliers to craft tables and paneling.

One of the most important achievements of him is the pulpit dome, which on the frontispiece has engraved the Unitarian creed: Egy az Isten (God is One).
