Viforata Monastery

Description

Viforata Monastery is located in the namesake village, at a distance of 7 km from the capital of Dambovita district, Targoviste.

Viforata Monastery was founded by Prince Vladislav Basarab (1447-1456). In the year 1530 were made some restoration work at the initiative of Prince Vlad Inecatul.

Viforata monastery is mentioned in documents in 1557 and restored in 1635 from the basis by Matei Basarab. Later, Maria Brancoveanu, wife of Constantin Brancoveanu (1713), modified the appearance of the monastery. Logofatul Metropolitan Nicolae, helped in turn the monastery's restoration after the earthquake of 1802.

The iconostasis was built in Baroque style, made by sculptor Karl Stork. There appear crosses made in 1704 and 1717, a collection of medieval art, an impressive relief icon of "St. George the Martyr", silver plated, gifted by Leon Tomsa Voda and his wife Victoria in 1631 and a silver goblet from 1775.
