Description
The interior painting of Voronet Monastery has the seal of the artistic period of Stefan, with a sober, focused and full of grandeur style, reducing to the essential the images and expressions. It distinguishes the image of "Pantocrator", "Last Supper", "Commune of the apostles with bread," "Commune with wine ", "Washing the feet". The exterior painting has a monumental artistic value.
The "Judgment Day", the largest composition is distinguished by dramatic intensity, richness of imagination, elements of local reinterpreting, color harmonies that prevail metallic blue and golden tones. The votive painting depicts the founder along with Mrs. Maria Voichita, a daughter and son Bogdan, all dressed in period costume.
The most famous church in Romania is the Church of St. Gheorghe of Voronet Monastery. With its exterior frescoes, with brightness and very intense colors, as well for the hundreds of characters preserved on the azure painting, the church impresses anyone passes its threshold.
Situated on the bank of a river, at the end of a large village with the same name, near the town of Gura Humorului, the monastic settlement Voronet has an unknown age. According to the legend of Stefan cel Mare, following victory against the Turkish, he built a new church dedicated to Saint Gheorghe, patron of victory in the battle. The researcher George Bals wrote in 1920 that this monastic settlement, like those built in the next century, are "Byzantine churches built with Gothic hands". In this sense, the structure and interior solutions refer to the Byzantine tradition and the South Slavs.
In terms of architecture, the monastery is similar to the other churches built during the reign of Stefan cel Mare. With great originality in decoration, the church was built on a three-lobed plan, with the tower above the nave and fragmented roof.
The church's structure is as follows: apses which preserves the original decorative elements: elongated niches and niches in the cornice, the transverse semi-cylindrically arch crowned the porch, two large windows allow light to penetrate into this room, the pronaos is also covered by a dome-shaped cap, the Moldovan arches and the pendentives support the nave dome and the tower. Gothic elements are present in the window frames. Stone borders that surround the doors of entering in the holy place situated to the north and south of the porch has elements of Gothic and Renaissance-style decoration.
Compositionally formed on four registers, the impressive scene of Judgement Day is located on the western facade. In the first register, at the top, is God - the Father, the second register includes Deisis scene framed by the Apostles seated on chairs. From the feet of the Savior is pouring a river of fire in which the sinners agonize. The third register is Etimasia of the Holy Spirit represented as a dove, the Holy Gospel and the Romanian people Ancestors - having in the north a group of believers guided by St. Pavel and in the south groups of believers who receive reproof of Moses. In the fourth register in the middle, appears the balance which measures good deeds and the bad, the struggle between angels and demons for the souls, in the northern heaven and hell in the south. Saint Gheorghe Church is included in UNESCO world patrimony.
